He envisioned a NYC version of the hawker markets in Singapore that he passionately loved. It would be a melting pot of cuisines and culture, with charcoal-fired clay pot rice and Vietnamese pho simmering and served at midnight. There’d be a butcher stall and blood on the floor, crowds, energy. If he could live life to the fullest, so can we. We can rise boldly into each day, though the darkness may be ever at our doorstep. People can know us not just for our frailties, but for our strengths.
This amazing human being who accomplished so much in his life — who inspired so many people all around the world and truly did something good for humankind — also struggled with the worst kind of depression. And yet, look at all that he was able to do. It’s the fact Anthony Bourdain was an amazing, productive, empathic, exemplary, sparkling firecracker of a person, and he was also — at least sometimes — depressed and suicidal. They were “extremely comfortable” being in silence together, and Bourdain loved competing against him, whether it was in chopping garlic or playing pétanque. One thing he couldn’t compete with Ripert at was skiing, but for an episode of “Parts Unknown” shot in the Alps, Bourdain had footage on the slopes edited to make it look like he was a far better skier than he was. Woolever also learned about Bourdain’s strange obsession with suntanning, which started in his early days.

News of Bourdain’s ambitious idea for a $350 million market broke first in 2014. The following year, he confirmed that he and his partners had subleased the main concourse and mezzanine of Pier 57. By 2017, they hoped to open Bourdain Market, with 100 vendors from all around the world spread across 100,000 square feet inside and out.

Restaurant stars at the time, April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman of the Spotted Pig were on track to operate two food stalls. On Wednesday, Seetoh and Urbanspace, the company behind numerous city food halls, are soft opening Urban Hawker in Midtown West. Eleven of the 17 vendors hail from Singapore, and most are family-owned businesses that have been cooking delicious food from all around Asia for decades. In 2013, he first met with Singapore food expert K.F. Seetoh about working together to open Bourdain Market.
Bourdain is asked if he’s afraid to see the consequences of what his government did. This was his most subversive attribute, and he usually wasn’t preachy about it. On camera, he was just curious and willing to listen. And we could see—in real time—how the journey was changing him. He was a global ambassador and champion of food, culture and adventure.

After divorce, I hated the holidays. His final gift to us — to depressed people everywhere — was to let us know he was, in fact, one of us. It most likely wasn’t his intention to give this gift, but nevertheless, it’s a powerful one. The beautiful thing about this dichotomy is that it contains a lesson — a gift of hope for depressed people everywhere.
“For a long time, Tony had his life run by women. I think that’s a big reason he’s done so well,” Nancy says of the incident. In fact, a key myth about Bourdain that the book dispels is that he went from being a humble chef to a hugely successful writer and TV personality overnight, with the publication of “Kitchen Confidential” in 2000.
But the logistics — especially securing visas for 100 different vendors — became too challenging. The vision was to give Bourdain fans a chance of tasting what he did on his television travels. “We’re telling a story of where all this delicious food came from,” Seetoh said.
“It couldn’t make the revenue everyone wanted it to. It was so complicated to operate, and Tony wanted real fire. There would have been health department issues because the markets he loved were ones in places that have different rules, and regulations and restrictions; they didn’t have requirements that new developments in New York City had,” Standefer says.
Maybe it was him — that burr in my sock the past few days. Maybe he gave me the hint, or the answer, to share with you. How was he able to live so fully while suffering so much? From my ordinary perspective, I think he did it by being himself — boldly and courageously. He pursued his passions — culinary arts, travel, relationships and fatherhood, to name a few.

We agree it all looks amazing, but the problem is that Tony Bourdain lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Best you can do for street food is some random hot dog cart near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So we propose having some chef work at Tony's beck and call.

Perhaps he kept moving so as not to stand still and feel the darkness closing in. But I believe that through his bold and exuberant living, he kept the darkness at bay. I will see him as a deeply depressed and gifted person who succeeded in living a truly amazing and inspiring life. Someone who fought the good fight every single day with truly remarkable results, until the day came that he just couldn’t anymore.
